The Kerala Government on Monday took yet another major step in the health care system by announcing free medical treatment for all AIDS patients in the state, with an anticipated annual financial commitment of Rs 1.65 crore.
Living up to the expectations of its status in health care on a par with developed countries, the Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, on Monday said that all the AIDS patients in the State would be given anti-retro viral drug therapy free of charge.
Kerala became the first state in the country to give free medical treatment to AIDS patients, the Chief Minister said, adding that a sum of Rs 1,500 per month would be required for a person. There were an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 AIDS distributed through all the medical college hospitals and subsequently at all the government hospitals
